The Law School Strategy That Made All the Difference
As a first-generation law student, I felt like others knew something I didn’t. So many of my classmates were the sons and daughters of prominent lawyers who guided them through law school’s ins and outs. These students already knew what to expect, especiallywhen it came to earning good grades and landing strong jobs.
I felt that lack of guidance right away. My first semester, I struggled and finished outside the top 50 percent of my class. But once I realized what wasn’t working, I made a full reset. With a new approach in place, I went on to land multiple semesters inside the top 10 percent at UNC Chapel Hill School of Law.
This turnaround didn’t just improve my grades, it changed my career trajectory. Thanks to my new law school strategy, I secured a role at one of the three largest firms in the world, DLA Piper, and I eventually landed a highly sought-after, in-house, fully remote position. None of this would have been possible with my below-average GPA from first semester.
How? The key insight I discovered is that law schools have an inherent flaw, and savvy students can leverage this inefficiency to excel on their final exams, the primary factor in law firm hiring.
The flaw is simple: law school classes, and the typical preparation methods used by students (casebook reading and cold-call preparation), do not align with how students are graded.
This might sound strange to students who have not started law school, but the reality is that classes rarely prepare students specifically for the final exam. And it’s a mess.
The good news? There is a way toleverage this flaw and use it to your advantage.
I started posting my law school strategies on LinkedIn, and in just six months, those posts gained over one million views. I then received countless messages from pre-law and law school students telling me my advice made a real difference in their legal studies, which means more to me than the likes, follows, or views.
Unfortunately, running my recruiting agency does not leave me enough time to respond to every student individually, though I wish I could. That’s why I poured everything I know about law school strategy into this newsletter.
